WellThot Jots — Support
WellThot Jots is a finger-first app for writing things down fast — a phone number, a confirmation code read out over the phone, a name and email, a quick shopping list. Write on a page with your finger, organize pages into notebooks, and sync everything to your own iCloud. Made by WellThot LLC.

The three screens
Jots is three screens deep: your notebooks, the pages inside one, and a page you're writing on. Here's what everything does — tap a number to jump to its explanation.
Writing on a page
- Back — returns to this notebook's pages.
- Undo and redo — as often as you like.
- Lock (Pro) — makes the page read-only, so a pocket or a toddler can't add to it.
- Portrait / landscape — turns this page, and the ink on it, ninety degrees. Every page keeps its own orientation; see Landscape pages.
- More (•••) — page info, rename, tags, background, duplicate, move, delete, and Save Ink as Default.
- Ink tools — pen style, nib size, colour, then the eraser and the lasso. Each of the first three opens a small tray.
- Share — send this page as an image.
- Page arrows — move through the notebook in the order the grid shows.
- New page — a blank page, right now.
A notebook's pages
- Back — returns to the notebooks list.
- More (•••) — sort by date or name, and switch between the icon grid and a list.
- New page — added wherever the current sort puts it.
- Search — finds pages in this notebook by title.
- A page — tap to open it. Touch and hold for Rename, Tags, Background, Duplicate, Move and Delete. Pinch the grid to resize the thumbnails.
All your notebooks
- Sort — order the notebooks by name or by date.
- Search — find a notebook by name.
- More (•••) — Auto‑Lock, Back Up All Data, Restore, Import Notebook, and Help & Guides.
- New notebook (Pro after the first).
- Smart notebooks (Pro) — computed views such as Recently Modified and Empty Pages.
- A notebook — tap to open. Touch and hold (or swipe) for Rename, Notebook Paper, the two Share formats, and Delete.
- Totals — notebooks, pages and size, plus the app version to quote if you report a bug.
Write your first page
- Open Jots and tap a notebook (there's one ready on first launch), then tap + to create a page.
- Draw with your finger — or an Apple Pencil on iPad. The tool bar floats at the bottom: tap the pen, color, or size button and a small tray pops open with the choices.
- That's it. Everything saves automatically as you write.
- Tip: Jots reopens on the page you last wrote on, ready to write. For a brand-new page from the Home Screen, touch and hold the Jots icon → New Jot.
Add, browse, and rename pages
- In a notebook you'll see all pages as a grid of thumbnails. Pinch to make them bigger or smaller.
- While writing, tap the compose button (bottom right) for a new page; the arrows move between pages in the same order the grid shows.
- Pages sort by date (newest first) or by name — the Sort menu in the notebook switches between them. A new page appears where the sort places it.
- To rename: touch and hold a page in the grid → Rename. Or, while writing, open the page's ••• menu → Page Info and edit the title. A renamed page moves to where it now sorts.
- Need a copy? Duplicate Page (touch and hold in the grid, or the ••• menu while writing) makes one instantly, numbering the title for you.
Pens, colors, and the lasso
- Tap the pen button to choose a style: ballpoint for everyday writing, fountain pen for expressive lines that swell and taper, or the calligraphy nib — a real chisel edge held at the classic 45° angle.
- The color and size buttons work the same way — tap, pick from the tray, keep writing.
- Found a combination you love? ••• menu → Save Ink as Default, and every page opens with that pen from then on.
- The lasso selects what you've drawn: circle some strokes, then drag them somewhere better — or use Cut, Copy, Paste, Duplicate, and Delete from the menu that appears. Copied strokes paste onto other pages too.
- Want the page to yourself? ••• menu → Hide Ink Tools tucks the bar away; the same item brings it back.
Undo, redo, and erase
- Undo and redo live at the top left while writing — tap them as often as you like.
- The eraser is with the pen tools; it removes whole strokes, so a stray line comes off cleanly.
Share a page or a notebook
- A page: while writing, tap the share button (bottom left) to send the page as an image — Messages, Mail, AirDrop, anywhere.
- A notebook, two ways: touch and hold the notebook in the list (or swipe its row) and pick either one.
- Share as PDF — for anyone. Every page in the notebook, in the order you're currently sorting it, each one headed with its title and date. They don't need Jots, or anything but a phone.
- Share Jots File — for another Jots. It carries everything (pages, tags, backgrounds, orientation) and can be imported as a real, editable notebook. A PDF can't come back; this can.
- To receive a Jots file: notebooks list → ••• → Import Notebook…
One caution. Anything you share leaves the app as a plain, unencrypted file — the image, the PDF and the Jots file alike. Inside the app your notes sit behind Apple's device and iCloud protection, but that protection doesn't travel with the file. If a page holds an account number or a door code, think about where you're sending it and treat the file as you would any other unencrypted document. See the Privacy Policy.
Sync across your devices
- Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on each device — that's the whole setup.
- Jots syncs through your private iCloud automatically; changes appear on your other devices moments later.
- Your notes stay in your iCloud — we never see them. See the Privacy Policy.
Back up and restore everything
- Notebooks list → ••• → Back Up All Data… exports one backup file — save it to Files, a drive, anywhere.
- Restore All Data… (same menu) brings a backup back. Restoring replaces what's in the app, so it asks first.
- A backup is a plain, unencrypted file holding every page you have — so keep it somewhere you'd be comfortable keeping any unencrypted copy of your notes. If you want it encrypted, put it somewhere that does the encrypting for you.
Trash and recovery
- Deleted pages go to the Trash notebook, not into thin air.
- Open Trash and touch and hold a page to Restore it — or Delete Permanently.
- Empty Trash clears it all; that one can't be undone.
Landscape pages
- Each page has its own orientation. A new page adopts the way you're holding the device.
- To switch a page, tap the orientation button at the top while writing.
- Turn your device to view a landscape page full size, like a photo.
Move pages and use tags (Pro)
- Touch and hold a page → Move to Notebook… to refile it. Select several pages first to move them together.
- Tags add a second way to organize: touch and hold a page → Tags…. Each tag appears as a smart notebook that gathers its pages from everywhere.
- Smart notebooks at the top of the list do their own gathering: Recently Modified collects your latest work, and Empty Pages rounds up blank strays ready for cleanup.
Page backgrounds and paper colors (Pro)
- While writing, open the page's ••• menu → background options.
- Pick a template (lines, grid, dots…), tint its paper color, or use a photo from your library.
- Backgrounds are per page — one page can be graph paper while the next stays blank.
- To make a whole notebook start on your paper: touch and hold the notebook in the list → Notebook Paper…. New pages in that notebook adopt it; existing pages keep theirs.
Lock pages and Auto-Lock (Pro)
- Tap the padlock at the top while writing to make a page read-only — no more stray marks from a pocket or a toddler. Tap again to unlock.
- Auto-Lock Pages (notebooks list → •••) locks each inked page automatically when you leave it — and unlocks it again when you return to it, so the page you're on is always ready to write. Locks you set yourself with the padlock stay locked until you unlock them.
- To lock or unlock several pages at once, select them in the grid and use Lock.
Jots Pro — what it is, buying, restoring
- Jots is free with one notebook — unlimited pages, every drawing tool, sync, backup, and Trash included. Creating a second notebook is where Pro begins. See the full comparison.
- Jots Pro is a one-time purchase — no subscription — that unlocks unlimited notebooks, tags & smart notebooks, page backgrounds, and read-only page locks — including Auto-Lock.
- Tap any Pro feature and the Jots Pro screen appears with the price; buying takes one tap through the App Store.
- New phone, reinstall, or family device on the same Apple Account? Open the Jots Pro screen and tap Restore Purchase.
Frequently asked
Is my data private?
Yes. WellThot Jots collects no data and has no accounts, ads, or tracking. Your notes live on your device and in your own iCloud only. See our Privacy Policy.
Does Jots work with Apple Pencil?
Yes — Jots is finger-first, so it never requires a Pencil, but on an iPad a Pencil works beautifully.
